Dear Parent / Carers,
Reopening on the 8th March
Whilst we are all absolutely thrilled to be able to welcome everyone back on the 8th March I won’t pretend that it is anything close to the elation you must have experienced when you heard the news. I sincerely hope this is the last time we ever have to close our doors during term time unless we have six foot of snow and can enjoy some sledging in Ally Pally!
So that teachers can prepare for the full reopening of school they will be coming into school next week so they can plan with their year group colleagues. This does mean that they will not be able to deliver a zoom meeting on the day that they are in school. They will contact you directly to inform you of which day this is.
Transitioning Back into School
Whilst getting back to normal routines is a key element of supporting our wellbeing we are very aware that this lockdown has been very hard for many families and so supporting children with their reintegration into school is our number one priority.
During the first week in particular, and in the weeks leading up to Easter, teachers will not be following the normal timetable rigidly and have planned dedicated wellbeing sessions throughout the day to give children time to talk about their experiences during lockdown. We are very aware that many children have not been able to play in a playground with lots of other children and have not seen their friends for a long time. This can take some adjusting to so staff have been asked to make sure that after every break time there is dedicated time to talk about playtimes to ensure that any issues are discussed and addressed. All teachers have been given the flexibility to adapt their daily time table so that they are able to spend as much time as necessary dealing with concerns and anxieties as they surface. I believe this flexibility is crucial in supporting children back into school.
At the end of a school term children would normally be doing end of term assessments in reading and maths. We will only have 3 and a half weeks until Easter which is not enough time to welcome children back, settle them in and then do formal assessments so these will not be taking place. However, assessing children and identify gaps so we can address them is very important. Teachers will continue to assess children as they work with them in class as part of their normal lessons. In some subjects, such as maths, this may involve very short tests/quizzes on a particular area e.g. multiplying, so we can identify any gaps in their learning but these are very short, focused and kept to a minimum.
Whole School Events
We have also got three special events which the children can look forward to. These are World Book Day, Science Week and Red Nose Day.
Whilst World Book Day this year falls on Thursday 4th March. We felt it wouldn’t be fair or half as much fun, to try to celebrate it before all children returned to school. Therefore we have decided to celebrate this special event on Wednesday 31st March, our last day at school before the Easter holidays. As usual, the children can come to school dressed up as their favourite book character and they will spend a day involving themselves in fun book activities and games in the classroom. We will also have an exciting whole school challenge coming your way! We can’t wait to celebrate this year and we’re sure the children will have a fabulous day.
We will also be celebrating Red Nose Day on Friday 19th March and we have rearranged Science Week for Monday 22nd March to Friday 26th March. Details about these events will be shared nearer the time but you can get started on your creative costumes for World Book Day.
Forest School
Forest School sessions will be back up and running straight away.
Year 3 were meant to have their sessions in the spring term and Year 5 in the summer term. As Year 3 have missed so many sessions due to the lockdown we have decided to split the remaining 16 sessions between Years 3 and 5 so they both receive 8 sessions each.
Year 3 will have sessions between Week Beginning 8th March and Week Beginning 17th May and Year 5 will have sessions between Week Beginning 24th May and Week Beginning 19th July.
Year 6 Pendarren and Forest School
Whilst we still have a booking for Year 6 to visit Pendarren we do not know whether this visit will be able to go ahead and we would like to offer Year 6 the opportunity for some Forest School sessions as they probably won’t get the opportunity in secondary school. Janine has therefore very kindly agree to do some extra sessions for Year 6 which will take place on Wednesdays between 9th June and 16th July.
Swimming
As swimming takes place in school swimming lessons can resume. However, we currently have a few issues with some of the equipment in the pool room which means there may be a delay before swimming lessons can resume. I am hoping these will be fixed next week but should this not be possible I will let you know.
School Street
Just before half term I informed you that we would be having a School Street on Nightingale Lane outside the main school entrance. Just to clarify this does not cover the whole of Nightingale Lane. I have attached a copy of a map so you can see which streets it covers. I have been informed that school street will come into enforcement after the Easter holidays.

Returning Laptops
During this lockdown we have distributed a number of laptops to support you with home learning. We politely request that you return these laptops when you child comes back to school on the 8th March.
I hope you have a fantastic weekend and can enjoy the spring like weather we are having at the moment.
Best wishes
