This is the blurb from the back. “Siblings Orinthia and Séafra Shalloo accept a summer job from eccentric Grandy Brock, who has collected a menagerie of furry and feathered posties known as animails. The children are especially fond of Geronimo, a homing pelican. But when the big bird fails to return from a delivery, Taber – the youngest sibling – is devastated; so much so, he mails himself to New York, where Geronimo was sent. Orinthia and Séafra follow suit, stealing a precious stamp and hopping in a freight crate – and soon all are embarked on an extraordinarily daring first-class adventure … A warm, adventurous and action-packed story from acclaimed author Holly Rivers, author of Demelza & the Spectre Detectors
World Book Week Competition
We will be running an exciting competition this year, where children will be asked to paint a rock to represent a book. These can be designed in any way you like – some examples can be seen below. Winners will receive their choice of book and runners up will also receive prizes. So get looking for your hand-sized rocks over half term and get creative!
New Value of the Week
A Value is a principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. As a community we have identified five core values which are:
We love to learn
We inspire a love of learning by providing engaging experiences within a rich and exciting curriculum that actively fosters creativity and natural curiosity about the world around us, and by ensuring a solid foundation of core knowledge and skills is acquired by all.
We aim high
We enable all our children to be ambitious by developing their confidence as independent learners who aim high, challenging themselves and the whole school to be the best they can be, continually improving as we go.
We are part of a global community
We are inclusive and foster a strong sense of belonging by building mutual respect, understanding and responsibility, in and out of the classroom, and by engaging with everyone in our school community. While understanding our place in the wider world, our school is firmly rooted in and values its unique and diverse locality, including its links to Alexandra Palace and Park.
We embrace a changing world
We prepare our children to engage in the world and thrive in the face of constant change and new challenges by providing a supportive ethos to develop the resilience and adaptability we all need to take life in our stride.
We care about each other and the environment
We provide a caring, sustainable, secure and happy environment where all our children and staff can flourish, by supporting each other’s emotional and physical health and well-being, and by having high expectations of behaviour for all.
We want to make these values more prominent in the school and everyone connected to the school so we are introducing a new assembly which will explore these ‘values’ in greater depth. To do this we have used materials from https://valuesbasededucation.com/ to identify a set of values which are broadly linked to our five core values. These are:
Each week during our Values Based assembly we will be exploring a value and discussing how it is linked to one of our core values. We will be sharing this ‘Value of the Week’ with you each Friday so you can also discuss it with your children at home.
This week we discussed the value ‘exploration’. Exploration promotes curiosity and discovery while limiting the fear of failure. We discussed how we can be explorers in school through asking questions in class, searching for solutions to problems in maths or science; designing new products in design and technology; learning about the past when we explore museums; or exploring the natural world during forest school. This week we have asked children to focus on these qualities in school.
Next week we will be thinking about the value of ‘confidence’. Confidence is defined as the faith we have in our abilities, the person we are, and how we view our most important relationship — the one with ourselves. We will be thinking about how confidence helps us to try new challenges; such as the high wire act at Go Ape; reaching out to new people when we move schools or having the confidence to share concerns with a trusted adult when we are worried about something.
Plea for Old Paintbrushes
We are looking for donations of any unwanted paint brushes and eco-friendly outdoor paint. This is so our eco-warriors can work on decorating the eco-garden as part of their new project.
