Maths
To enable children to use their knowledge and understanding of mathematics confidently, now and in every aspect of their future lives.
At Campsbourne we following the National Curriculum for Maths which can be found here.
We teach maths using the White Rose Programme.
This program helps teachers to create maths lessons that meet all national curriculum guidelines in a fun, inclusive and age-appropriate way. White Rose primary maths resources are designed to instil a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a full range of fun, inspiring classroom activities.
At Campsbourne Primary School we intend to:
- Promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, cross curricular learning, exploration and discussion.
- Develop mathematical skills and knowledge and quick recall of basic facts in line with the National Curriculum Mathematics Programmes of Study.
- Promote confidence and competence with numbers and the number system.
- Develop the ability to think mathematically: solve problems through decision making and reasoning in a range of contexts.
- Develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented.
- Explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts.
- Understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life and promote mathematical thinking as a life skill.
- To use mathematics as part of their everyday life in school and at home.
Progression Maps
The progression maps below show how the different units are mapped out across the different year groups and when new topics are introduced.
Maths Progression Map (EYFS and KS1)
Assessment
Children are continually assessed by teachers in class against key objectives linked to the units which you can view in the progression maps. These assessments are used to inform teaching and ensure children who need extra support are provided this during interventions / pre teaching groups during assembly time.
In year 2 children are introduced to written papers from the spring term. In key stage 2 children complete written assessments three times a year at the end of each term.
Teachers use information from both of these sources to assess children and provide an overall assessment which states where children are mastering, meeting or working below expectations.
Key Mathematical Skills
In addition to the key knowledge that children learn which you can see in the progression maps we also ensure that children develop the following key skills which we believe you need to be a good mathematician.
- Reasoning Describes, convinces & justifies decisions following lines of enquiry and generalising.
- Problem Solving: Works systematically & spots patterns by visualising and making conjectures.
- Fluency: Works efficiently and accurately.
- Communication: Makes their mathematical thinking clear to themselves and others.
- Reflection: Uses own and suggested strategies to make corrections and improvements
