Dear Parent / Carers,
Year 4 Visit William Morris Gallery
Year 4 had an exciting trip to the William Morris Gallery on Tuesday to explore printing techniques and to learn more about William Morris’ journey to becoming an artist. The children had the opportunity to create their own printed design and then had a guided tour through the gallery. The children learnt about William Morris’ connection to the environment which linked well to our science trip to Alexandra Palace park last week!

Reminders for Next Week
Don’t forget that next week we are hosting our EYFS Coffee Morning for reception parents on Wednesday 4th October 9.00 – 9.45 and we are also having our first open morning of the year for Years 4, 5 and 6 on Friday 6th October.
Black History Month
Next week children will be celebrating the start of Black History month and introducing the theme for this year, which is ‘Saluting Our Sisters’ and celebrating the achievement and contributions of black women.
Below is a list of famous black women who the children will be learning about in each year group.
Reception: African/Caribbean history through art and music
Year 1: Claudia Jones – Founder of Notting hill Carnival and journalist
Year 2 – Mary Seacole (British-Jamaican nurse, healer and businesswoman who set up the “British Hotel” behind the lines during the Crimean War)
Year 3 – Alisha Dixon (Singer and Rapper)
Year 4 – Simone Biles (Gymnast)
Year 5 – Emma Clarke (First female black footballer who played in Ally Pally) AND Jess Carter (Black footballer from the euro squad)
Year 6 – Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock (Scientist)
Throughout the month children will also enjoy assemblies about Famous Black Britons and workshops with Wise Moves Dance https://wisemovesdance.co.uk/black-history-month-workshops-for-schools/
Too often in schools the message children are given is that that racism and the civil rights movement are part of American history and not ours through the teaching of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. But we know this is not the case and so during assemblies we have been introducing children to two important figures in the UK civil rights movement, Paul Stephenson and Darcus Howe. Paul Stephenson is famous for the Bristol Bus Protest and Darcus Howe is famous for the Mangrove Restaurant trial.
You can find out more about Paul and Darcus in the links below.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/03/darcus-howe-obituary
I am therefore thrilled so say that on Monday 16th October Leila Howe, who is the wife of Darcus Howe, will be delivering an assembly to Year 4, 5 and 6 about her time in the 70s and 80’s and delivering the inspiring message that as young people they wanted to make society a fairer place and succeeded in many ways, although there is clearly still more to be done.

HSA Events for 2023/2024
HSA September 2023: Welcome back to school! The HSA (Home/School Association) aims to support the school through fundraising and community-building events. Despite having fewer team members this year, we’re planning one big event per term: Campsbourne’s famous Fireworks Disco on Saturday 4th November; the Spring Egg Hunt on Saturday 23rd March, and the Summer Fair on Saturday 22nd June. All dates are in the school calendar – keep an eye on Classlist for updates too. If you enjoyed past events and want to help, please reach out. We can only put on more events if we have more people to help. You can also support us behind the scenes – it’s a great way to enhance your skills and get to know lots of lovely people across the school community. There is a lot you can do from home at a time that suits you. Your involvement makes a difference! You can email us hsacampsbourne@gmail.com to find out how. Thank you!
Festive Cards!
Every year at Campsbourne we work with a company that transforms your child’s artwork into a set of high-quality festive cards, mugs or wrapping paper and tags. The ordering and payments are online. You’ll need to login or set up an account at https://www.cauliflowercards.co.uk/parents-shop which is very quick and easy to do. There will be a unique number on the forms that you use to place your order before you return the artwork to the class teacher. The collection deadline is Friday 20th October. Don’t worry – there are full instructions on the forms, and there will be reminders on Classlist as we get close to the deadline.
