Dear Parent / Carers,
War in Ukraine
I am sure that we are all extremely concerned by the war in Ukraine and want to offer our support to those who are suffering. It has been made very clear to us that they do not need items of clothing etc as getting physical items to those who need them most is so difficult. If you would like to offer some support the best way that you can do this is by making a monetary donation which you can do through the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). Every pound donated will be matched by the UK Government up to £20 million. You can donate through the following link https://www.dec.org.uk/
Talking to Our Children
Talking to children about horrific events such as wars is incredibly difficult for all of us. They have been through so much in the past two years with the pandemic and I am very conscious that many children are experiencing anxiety to a much greater level than before the pandemic which we also need to be mindful of. The challenge for a school is to do address these events in a way which considers children’s individual circumstances. I am very aware that some children may have experience of events such as wars or have very close family ties to Ukraine, Russia or other parts of Eastern Europe. They all have different levels of maturity, regardless of their age, and as parents we all have our own view as to what is appropriate for such young minds; so children come to school with very different levels of knowledge and understanding.
I don’t want to raise this issue with children who may well be blissfully unaware of the tragic events, so we have not discussed the War in Ukraine with the children during assemblies. However, I know that some of your may want to discuss the war with your children and so we have provided you with links to two sets of resources which may help you with these conversations. The first link is from UNICEF.

The second link is from an organisation called City Parents. This resource does require you to register with them and you can find out more about City Parents using the following link.

I have asked staff to be vigilant and if they do hear children talking about the war to let me know so that we can talk to children either individually or in small groups to answer any questions they may have or provide some reassurance. We will continue to monitor this very closely and if we think we do need to discuss events more formally with children I will inform you before we deliver any assemblies so that you are prepared to answer questions at home which may arise.
